Artist Bio:

Laurie Riley is a signature member of Artists for Conservation, an award-winning member of the International Guild of Realism, and owner of Art of Wild Gallery in Port Townsend, Washington State. Her astoundingly detailed work has been shown in numerous international online juried shows, and her many prizes include “Best of Animals and Wildlife” in the 2019 online exhibition of the International Guild of Realism. She was the recipient of the prestigious Featured AFC Conservation Artist of the Month for August 2020.

Laurie’s work has previously been shown in galleries in the discerning art communities of Sedona, Tubac, and Jerome, Arizona; in Seattle-area galleries and juried shows, and in her own gallery. Laurie’s work was featured on the cover of the June 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Veterinary Association, and her pieces have appeared in several issues of Western Art Collector magazine.

Viewers remark that Laurie’s paintings depict the soul of the animal as well as the finest details of its physical appearance. “I feel like it’s speaking to me,” is an often-heard comment in her gallery. To bring a true appreciation of their personalities to the viewer, each pose and expression is realistic, without added idealism; yet there is something more happening here than just paint and canvas. Laurie strives to give the viewer an awareness that every creature is sentient. It is her intention to inspire the viewer to support the preservation of wildlife and habitat, and the right of every wild-born animal to roam free. Laurie’s patrons have remarked that when they spend time with her paintings, they develop a deep relationship with them. Laurie is grateful that her work inspires such meaningful experience.

Laurie was fortunate in her teen years to be tutored by a nature artist from the Wedgewood Company of England, and had her first one-person gallery show at the age of 16, in Morristown, New Jersey. She then received a scholarship to study art and music at Marlboro College, Vermont. As a young adult, Laurie explored graphic arts, illustration, and jewelry making, selling at East Coast and Colorado fine craft shops, galleries, and major art fairs for many years. Laurie then spent 30 years as a professional touring harpist. She began painting again in 2005.
